Konnichiwa! Welcome to a brief look at our 2 - 3 Day Country Specific Training program on Japan. Geographically, it is surprising to many that although Japan is an island nation, Japan is actually made up of four islands. Yet, it is still smaller than the state of Montana while at the same time has the 4th largest national GDP and a per capita income of over $39,000.00 US.

This is the premier Group-Focused culture on the planet as opposed to American culture which is the singular most Individual-Focused Culture.

WHY BEHIND THE WHAT: Loyalty is to the Group -- period. It could be friends, family, your organization -- and particularly, loyalty to your superiors. Your individual feelings or wishes never take precedence over Loyalty. As a result, you should expect significant cultural emphasis on relationships and relationship maintenance. Showing emotion, contradicting a superior -- or worse, an older family member -- is such bad form in this culture that to do so almost certainly brings long-term consequences.

The Japanese live on 3% of the world's land mass (smaller than Montana, remember?) yet its people represent 3% of the world's population -- slightly less than half the US's population. This population density is often cited as the main reason for the Group-Focus of this culture. Under these conditions, not surprisingly, group activity and conformity have proven to be the best way to avoid conflict.

In the cities, you should expect to be in crowds -- big crowds -- everywhere and anytime of the day or night. This is one of the first cultural realities Americans crash into -- for most, it is unnerving and can even be debilitating. The Japanese accept this as just part of Tokyo life (or other large Japanese city). Something as simple as taking a subway or metro to work takes on a "personal space" assault to the traumatic level for most Americans. Can't imagine it? Not surprisingly, social form and proper personal and business "etiquette" are very important -- and considering you are representing your company or agency, you are expected to have all the appropriate social skills and manners.
