Here's a detailed description of a typical 4-5 Day Program:

DAY ONE -- PT 1:  AMERICAN CULTURE IN THE (CLIENT'S) INTERNATIONAL WORLD

COLLAGEThis presentation provides a baseline of knowledge for Americans working with internationals -- particularly those cultures we are discussing this week.  Understanding your cultural structure is the all-important first step in learning how to work with other cultures. Recognizing cultural differences between "us and them" provides a foundation for successful interactive behavior.  By understanding the contrasting cultural elements, you move to a more culturally competent position. Years ago, we developed a series of cultural training techniques we call "Cultural Kung Fu" in that with this training, you learn how to use the movement and dynamics of another culture to your advantage.  This is the first step to employing our Cross Cultural Communications Strategies.

AVOIDING CULTURAL CONTAMINATION:  With Cultural Kung Fu techniques you learn to see the previously invisible cultural dynamics.  In so doing, you can view other cultures more accurately and avoid falling into the trap of Cultural Contamination.  This occurs when your US cultural perspective affects your observations and interactions with international colleagues.  This not only holds interpersonal implications.  It can also dramatically skew interpretation of regional, socio-political data, intel, etc.

This training shows how you can avoid this by understanding a few "Cultural Keys" and provides an analysis structure framing this weeks regions and subjects of discussion.

DAY ONE PT. 2:  LATIN AMERICA -- GETTING TO COMPETENCY

What an enormous piece of real estate -- 21 million sq. miles! -- and, with every ethnic group on the planet found here, combining the challenges found with over 20 languages -- and ten times as many dialects -- the newcomer to Latin America can easily be overwhelmed as what they thought they knew is shown to be wrong.

LATIN AMERICA: THE MOST DANGEROUS LOCATION FOR BUSINESS TRAVEL

Combining language, ethnicity, politics, history, narc-terrorism, human smuggling, and other criminal activity makes a general description about Latin American Culture difficult -- but there are several core cultural elements transcending political and regional borders -- it depends where you look, at what class level you examine and what the level of international exposure.  Has the media affected our view of Latin America? Did you know the US imports more oil from Latin America than all Middle East countries combined?  Huh? Dr. C's exploration of stereotyping , machismo, as well as business/social issues and behavior reveals the mechanisms behind Latin America culture.

It is a powerful, information packed training program.  Seminar attendees will now look at Latin America with knowledge and confidence -- and an appreciation for the complicated cultural, political, and socio-economic tapestry that is Latin America.

DAY TWO -- THE MIDDLE EAST:  GETTING TO CULTURAL COMPETENCY

WITH ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION ON -- PAKISTAN:

This presentation is the perfect combination of academic and real-world training.

Today's informational sequencing takes seminar attendees across three areas critical to understanding the Middle East; Desert Culture, Islam, and the Arab-Israeli State of Affairs -- the single most volatile subject in the Middle East.

KEY:  YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE MIDDLE EAST WORLD WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THE INFLUENCE OF THE DESERT, ISLAM, AND THE ARAB- ISRAELI SITUATION.

The harshness of Central Arabian desert living birthed a responding cultural structure carrying on for centuries that today we call Bedouin or Desert Culture.    The effects of this historical background still ripple out throughout Middle East cultures today.  This system of social organization developed as a result of family, clan, tribe, etc., providing economic, life sustenance, support and protection necessary for survival.  No surprise then, the individual gave unquestioning loyalty to their group, tribe, clan, region, etc.  This gave rise to clan-based networks and depending where you look, can be strong today.  Often this group-loyalty is basis of social relations between many Middle Easterners today.

Many Americans -- steeped in equality and individualism -- have difficulty accepting allegiance to a group, clan, etc., instead of to our immediate family, or ourselves.  Also, foreign to many Americas is the concept of Avoidance of Shame and/or "Saving Face."  Without our expert instruction, most Americans are completely unaware of the importance of this.  Also called Loss of Face, if shame  falls upon the family, it can last for generations.  Marriage plans can be lost, college plans, business issues, etc., can all be effected.   Below you find a helpful  "snapshot" of several US - Middle East contrasting Hi-Value elements:

History is a powerful component in the Arab World and Pakistan is no exception -- particularly when it comes to Pakistan-India relations.  This is a prickly area for most Americans due to our (1) misunderstandings of the region and (2) no knowledge of the history between the two countries -- including atrocities inconceivable to most Americans.

An excellent example of this "living-history" is seen at the Wagah Border Crossing - the only point on the India-Pakistan border where a road connects both countries.  Michael Palin (of Monty Python fame) provides a thorough description of present day ceremonial events held every day at Wagah. Watch it below:

Today's training is enlightening and a powerful learning experience -- often erasing years of erroneous stereotypes by effectively framing Middle East history, religion, social and political components into a complete understandable package.

DAY THREE -- THE MIDDLE EAST CONTINUED -- FOCUS: SAUDI ARABIA

In addition to the above training on Desert Culture, Islam, etc., we now turn your employee's attention to Saudi Arabia; about 1/4 the size of the US and arguably the most dominant religious, political, and military player in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is home to the two holiest sites of Islam; Mecca and Medina.  Not surprisingly, an understanding of Islam is critical in order to successfully engage your Saudi counterpart. That's why we urge today's students to attend the Day 2 instruction on the Middle East which includes an informative and powerful explanation of Desert Culture and Islam.  A side-by-side comparison of US Saudi Hi-Value Cultural Components quickly shows the US and Saudi cultures are nearly polar opposites.  BUTour training teams are experts at explaining all of this.  Previous attendees report they are grateful for the understanding and were overwhelmed with the quality and thoroughness of the training.

DAY FOUR -- NE & SE ASIA -- WITH ADDITIONAL FOCUS ON JAPAN AND KOREA

CHINA'S INFLUENCE ON ASIA CULTURES

This presenation begins with a wide focus on the enormous cultural-histoical-socio-economic-political impact of China on the Asia Pacific region today.  NO MATTER WHERE YOU LOOK IN ASIA, the roots of that culture have significant China cultural underpinnings.  No surprise, understanding this makes it easier to grasp the enormity of Asia and the shared and contrasting cultural components found throughout today's regional and subject discussions.

THROUGHOUT ASIA: IT'S ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS: Americans come from the "Good Samaritan" cultural background which says anyone who needs your help deserves it.  In traditional Confu

cian teaching -- not a religion but rather a detailed code of interpersonal behavior --  relationships and relationship maintenance are critical;  relationships require responsibilities and attention.  If, however, you have no relationship with someone, no response is expected; no relationship means no obligations.  Feeling is, if those responsible for someone in need -- those who have a relationship with this individual -- took care of their responsibilities and relationship obligations, this individual would not need help, etc.  Kung Fu-Tzu (known as Confucius) taught that if every personknew his or her proper pace in society ad upheld those responsibilities, peace and harmony would be achieved.  "Let the Ruler be Ruler, the Father Be Father, and the son be son."  Additionally, in today's Korea, you can easily see the influence of Confucianism -- and a few of the important ones contrast distinctly with the American outlook on the same areas.

KOREA:

One of the first South Korean cultural items to grasp clearly is to understand Korea is as close as any region comes to being a homogeneous society -- indeed, Korean ethnicity and nationality nearly coincide. The only non-Korean minority group in Korea is a very small Chinese commnity of about 20,000.

It is not unusual for you to hear the Korean phrase, han p'it-chul (one bloodline) from your Korean colleagues which describes their shared identity.

The Confucian outlook on balance and relationship is even found on the Korean flag; the balance of two opposing teardrops -- known as Yin and Yang -- symbolizes the mutual dependency of opposing issues and that without one, the other doesn't exist; day/night, hot/cold, etc.  Furthermore, the marks around the Yin/Yang symbol represent the seasonal changes -- and the colors?  Chosen as a tribute to General MacArthur.

JAPAN:  How do you make sense of Tea Ceremonies, Proper Business Card Etiquette, History, Shinto, Japanese Food, Group vs Individual Focus, Samurais, Sumos, Geishas, Language, and Kimonos, etc?  This culture holds several cross cultural "trap doors" that can swallow the naive or unprepared -- and victims never understand the importance of these cultural issues until too late.  The good news?  Our trainers make this another powerful learniing event combining history, religion, social obligations, in and out of office cultural expectations, etc., into a cohesive educational structure that prepares you to tackle the most difficult and most frightening aspect of US - Japanese business culture interaction:  Karaoke.

Not to worry; we train you on how to sing Karaoke -- even what songs are best!

DAY FIVE-- TERRORISM AWARENESS/TRAVEL SAFETY-SECURITY

For most Americans, working in a high-threat environment can be completely debilitating.  That's why we include region specific Terrorism Awareness/Threat Recognition/Personal Security training as part of our Cultural Competency training -- and that includes the criminal threat as well.  If you are working in a high threat, out-of-US location and are afraid to leave the hotel or company compound you will simply not be an effective member of your organization -- certainly not like you were in the US.

Our easy-to-employ personal security techniques help make you a more difficult target for criminals, scam artists, pickpockets, etc.  The bad guys are looking for an unattentive -- easy -- target.  So,....

WE TRAIN YOU TO BE DIFFICULT

Traveling or working in a higher threat area?  How do you balance paranoia with reality?  Is someone following or surveilling you? How do you know? Where are you most vulnerable?  When? We will even put you into the position of the terrorist/bad guys; how do you put together an attack?  Where are they most vulnerable?  This is a fascinating and empowering method of instruction.  Your personnel will be delighted with the results.
